Note: You must complete the 200 level of study on your major instrument before graduation. You may study at the 300 level with consent of instructor and/or area faculty.

Note: When piano is not your major applied instrument, complete MUS 246 or MUS 160. This requirement can also be fulfilled via a test-out option.

Every music major must enroll, participate, and receive a passing grade in a major ensemble every semester except the student teaching semester (8 semesters minimum) (See Note 3).

Earn at least 8 credits from the following:

Piano majors: 1 credit from MUS 328 may be taken in lieu of large ensemble upon course offering.

Contemporary Voice majors may substitute up to 4 semesters of MUS 344 after having completed 4 semesters of MUS 341. Other applied students may substitute up to 2 semesters of Mus 344 or Mus 345 with instructor and large ensemble director approval.

Complete Electives

Electives may include any music or music education course not already listed in the required courses above, with the exception of the following:

  • MUS 100

  • MUS 101

  • MUS 102

  • MUS 105

  • MUS 108

  • MUS 109

  • MUS 159

Complete World Language Requirement

Complete a two-semester sequence of university entry-level world language courses (101, 102). The requirement may be fulfilled through equivalent coursework or other language acquisition as demonstrated through a test-out policy (including Native American languages and American Sign Language). If your native language is not English and you can document formal high school or university study of your native language, you may use ENGL 101 and ENGL 202, or ENGL 150 as a means of fulfilling this world language requirement.
